A variable area flow meter or rotameter is a very simple device that measures the flow of most process gases and liquids.
As the flow of product increases through the flow meter, the position of the float or needle indicator as shown in the image of the F6000 opposite gives a visual indication of the instantaneous current flow rate that is easily read by the user.
As the flow decreases to zero in all types of variable area meters, the float or needle, etc, that gives the user the instantaneous flow rate returns to its initial resting position until the process starts again.
Variable area flow meters are available in various forms such as flow indicators, flow transmitters, flow alarms, viscosity compensated meters for oil service, etc.

The 7200 series clear view flow meter is of robust construction with a flow rates up to 1000 lt/min and sized from 1/2” to 2” BSPP female process connections. An economical solution for the user.
While the cost can be slightly higher, our glass tube flow meters offer the user an extremely good and accurate flow meters.
Our range of variable area meters series 630, 1000, 1200, 1700, 1750, 3000, 3500 and others are manufactured with Stainless Steel, Ni plated Brass or PVC end blocks, aluminium or stainless-steel chassis and borosilicate glass metering tube with floats to suit the process medium. All the above models can be found on our web site with data sheets.
A number of the glass tube Variable Area flow meters can be supplied with or without a needle control valve. This option allows the operator to set and adjust flow rates as required. An economical latching alarm device is also available, this enables the alarm to remain activated whilst flow is above or below a set point. Ideal for remote and process control applications
The metal tube flow meters are great for opaque liquids usually with an external indicator. Due to their construction, they are suitable for high pressure and or high temperatures applications. As well as having good chemical resistance with stainless Steel housing this style of flow meter can be installed into vertical or horizontal piping.
In most cases, rotameters or variable area flow meters need to be mounted in a vertical position because they work by gravity. But there are options, e.g., spring-loaded rotameters can also be mounted in a horizontal plane.
For selection purposes you will need to know some application details, such as the product to be metered, minimum and maximum flow rate, nominal pipe diameter, operating temperature & pressure and if the application requires a valve for flow regulation and if required any outputs from the flow meter.
